One of the biggest surprises for many travelers is that September in Greenland is often milder than they expected.
While Greenland certainly earns its reputation for Arctic landscapes, the experience depends greatly on where you are. If you're staying at Camp Kiattua, near Nuuk in Southwest Greenland, September is comfortable enough that you'll spend much of your day in normal outdoor clothing with a few warm layers.
Why Kiattua Feels Milder
Camp Kiattua sits in the Nuuk Fjord system, where the coastal climate is generally milder than northern Greenland. September typically brings crisp, fresh air rather than extreme cold.
Daytime temperatures often range between 5°C and 10°C, making it comfortable for hiking, boat trips, kayaking, and simply relaxing around camp.
The evenings become cooler, especially after sunset, but layering is all you need to stay comfortable.
What About Camp Saqqaq?
Camp Saqqaq, located much farther north in Disko Bay, experiences cooler temperatures during September. While it is not usually "killer freezing," it does feel noticeably colder than Kiattua, particularly when you're out on the water or when the wind picks up.
This difference is simply part of Greenland's geography. Traveling farther north means entering a cooler Arctic climate.
Do You Need Heavy Polar Gear?
For most visitors, the answer is no.
A typical September packing list includes:
A waterproof jacket
A warm fleece or insulated mid layer
Comfortable hiking pants
Waterproof hiking boots
A beanie and light gloves for evenings or boat rides
Many guests spend their days wearing the same type of outdoor clothing they would use for hiking during autumn in Europe or North America.
September Is One of Greenland's Best Months

September offers some of the most rewarding conditions of the year.
The summer crowds have faded, the tundra begins to turn golden, the air feels fresh and clear, and the first Northern Lights often appear as the nights grow darker.
It is a season of contrast, where warm camp evenings meet cool Arctic mornings, creating a comfortable environment for exploring Greenland without facing the deep winter conditions many people imagine.
If you're deciding between Camp Kiattua and Camp Saqqaq, expect Kiattua to feel milder overall, while Saqqaq offers a cooler Arctic atmosphere that many travelers also love.
Greenland in September is not about surviving the cold. It is about experiencing the Arctic comfortably, one layer at a time.
